Student Blackboard Orientation: Navigating A Course

Blackboard Orientation

Navigating a course

When you first log into a course you will see the Announcements.  The instructor can post any messages here for the students to see, including schedule, upcoming assignments, or any class cancelations.

Looking to the left inside your course, let’s take a look at what each of these pages offers.

course dashboard

Announcements is the first page you land on and works the same as announcements on the My Institution page but only shows announcements from the instructor of this single course.

Course information will contain information relative to this course such as a course Syllabus, an assignment schedule, and your instructors contact information.

Course Assignments, this is the page you’ll spend most of your time on within Blackboard.  Typically your instructor will divide your course assignments up into different modules that are grouped together by a common learning element.

A discussion board is an online conversation that your instructor will start and the class continues.  Your instructor will post what is called a Forum, this will be a question or topic your instructor proposes.  Students will click on the Forum and create a thread to answer the question or contribute to the topic conversation.  Students can click into other students’ threads to read what their fellow classmates are discussing and reply directly to them.

If your course schedule has a discussion board due and you don’t see it in your course assignment module, click on the discussion board button from the left navigation.

Quizzes or exams can also be completed through Blackboard, you will find these within a course assignment module or under the Quizzes and Tests button from the left navigation.

Finally, the last button in the left navigation is My Grades.  From this page you can check on your current grade for the course, see how you did on each assignment or quiz, and read feedback from your instructor on how you did for a particular assignment.
